The BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) invests $7.6 million in nine companies addressing energy, carbon, and alternative fuel challenges.

Top recipients include Hydron Energy, Arca, and PH7 Technologies, working on waste-to-fuel solutions, carbon capture, and copper extraction, respectively.

The British Columbia (BC) Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) has announced a $7.6 million investment in nine pioneering companies as part of its 2024 call for innovation. This funding is aimed at advancing clean energy technologies and addressing critical challenges in energy storage, carbon management, alternative fuels, and low-carbon hydrogen production. Chosen from over 200 applicants, these companies represent a concerted effort to push forward innovative solutions in industries traditionally difficult to decarbonize, such as forestry, mining, and agriculture.

The selected projects include Hydron Energy’s waste-to-fuel solution, which secured the largest investment of $1.3 million. Hydron’s Intensified Regenerative Upgrading Platform Technology (INTRUPTor) transforms raw gases into refined fuel, which will be implemented at a wastewater treatment facility in Prince George, BC. Arca, another recipient, was awarded $1.25 million for its novel carbon management project. The company is developing technology to convert mine tailings into carbon sinks, enhancing their ability to capture carbon through microwave radiation. This project also positions Arca as a Canadian finalist in the Elon Musk-backed XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition.

PH7 Technologies received $1 million to prototype its copper extraction technology, which simultaneously produces hydrogen as a byproduct, further contributing to clean energy initiatives. Other recipients include innovators in sectors ranging from alternative fuels to advanced materials.

CICE has contributed a total of $31 million across 47 clean energy projects since its inception in 2021, aiming to scale commercial clean energy solutions. New calls for innovation, including those targeting wildfire management technologies, are already underway with applications open until August 2024.
