The Story Behind a Game-Changing App for JPM Healthcare Conference

For over 20 years, I’ve attended the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, one of the most important events in the healthcare industry. From my earliest visits, I noticed something intriguing: while the official conference at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco draws significant attention, most attendees—over 80% by some estimates—don’t actually attend its sessions. Instead, they focus on the hundreds of satellite events held around the city, which offer targeted networking opportunities and more tailored discussions.

These satellite events are where deals are made, relationships are built, and careers can be launched. However, finding these events was a frustrating challenge. Information about them was scattered, shared informally, or hidden behind insider connections. First-time attendees, entrepreneurs, and smaller companies—those who needed this information the most—often had the least access. I’ve always believed that your network is your net worth, and this lack of access to networking opportunities was a major barrier for many. I decided to bridge this gap.

A Simple Beginning: The PDF List

In 2018, I started by creating a straightforward solution. Using publicly available sources and leveraging personal connections, I compiled a comprehensive list of satellite events and organized it into a simple PDF. I branded it with our company’s logo, Novateur Ventures, and shared it widely with colleagues and peers.

The response was immediate and enthusiastic. At the conference, I saw attendees walking around with printed copies of my PDF, identifiable by the Novateur Ventures logo. It was clear that this small step addressed a big need for many.

The Next Step: Creating an App

By 2019, I knew the idea needed to evolve. A PDF was helpful but limited. An app could centralize this critical information, making it easier for attendees to plan, connect, and navigate the event. There was just one problem—I had no experience building apps.

Determined, I learned the basics of app development, tackled the complexities of the Apple and Android app stores, and worked with a close friend to create a simple yet effective tool. Just in time for the next JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, we launched the app with three clear goals:

  • Accessibility: The app was free and easy to use, ensuring no attendee was left out.

  • Privacy: We are committed to not collecting personal data, but keeping user trust at the forefront.

  • Democratization: The app leveled the playing field, providing everyone with equal access to critical event information.

A Pandemic Pivot

In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the app gained the attention of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). They recognized its potential and partnered with us to market it, adding their brand alongside Novateur Ventures. It was a significant milestone.

When the pandemic disrupted in-person events, we adapted by focusing on virtual launches and refining the app. This period allowed us to prepare for the return of live events with even better features.

Making an Impact

By 2023, the app had become an essential tool for conference attendees. With over 8,000 users, the app was widely used to:

• Discover and track satellite events tailored to individual interests.

• Add events to personal calendars.

• Find directions to venues across San Francisco.

• Share attendance plans with colleagues for seamless networking.

During the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, users spent an average of 30 minutes per day on the app, taking full advantage of its features to maximize their experience. We also introduced a safety feature, offering tips for navigating downtown San Francisco, a concern for many visitors in recent years.

Looking Ahead

As we prepare for the 2025 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, we’re excited about the app’s continued growth. This year, we aim to feature over 200 events and surpass 10,000 users. Our mission remains unchanged: to empower attendees with the tools they need to make the most of their experience, whether it’s their first time or their twentieth.

What started as a simple PDF has evolved into a transformative platform that democratizes access to critical information, levels the playing field, and helps attendees build the networks that define their net worth. We’re proud of the difference we’ve made and look forward to growing this impact in the years to come.
